Description:
With The Night Manager season 2 drawing to a close, here are the next Prime Video thrillers that'll have you gripped.
FULL STORY ======================================================================
A decade on from its first season, the return of The Night Manager has had Prime Video viewers (or BBC iPlayer users, if youre UK based) gripped with
the show sitting firmly in the top three most-watched in the US. But with the further adventures of Jonathan Pine (or whatever hes calling himself this week) set to draw to a close, subscribers may be looking for their next thriller obsession. And thats where we come in.
Unlike the weekly helpings of the above though, for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, the opening months of the year are the perfect time to hunker down for a weekend binge with one the best streaming services . So, with that in mind, these wont be recommendations that require a multiple season commitment, but shows that can easily be consumed over 48 hours, blanket and snacks optional.
Whatsmore, all three have very respectable Rotten Tomatoes scores and can be streamed on Prime Video worldwide, so no need to go hunting for their home in your territory. Prepare for a weekend on the (edge of) your sofa with three
of the best Prime Video shows around. The Girlfriend
RT score: 88%
Episodes: 6
Main Cast: Robin Wright, Olivia Cooke, Laurie Davidson, Waleed Zuaiter,
Tanya Moodie
Debuting back in September, The Girlfriend was an instant hit, with audiences flocking to the saucy psychological thriller.
Camp and trashy in the best way possible, the show stars House of the Dragon
s Olivia Cooke as Cherry, the new girlfriend of Daniel (Laurie Davidson), who may, or may not, be a pawn for her social climbing ambitions. But while
Daniel may be blissfully in love, his wealthy mother Laura (Robin Wright) has her suspicions and isnt afraid to make them known.
While the show does attempt some commentary on class and sexual politics, its best not taken too seriously. The story takes some wild twists and turns,
with all the melodrama of classic Hollywood thrown together with the cliff-hanger pacing of modern TV. The Girlfriend is excessive, loud and cheesy, but it's exactly the kind of show thats perfect for a lazy Sunday binge. Steal
RT score: 77%
Episodes: 6
Main Cast: Sophie Turner, Archie Madekwe, Jacob Fortune-Lloyd
Steal debuted mere days ago and is already sitting firmly at the top of the Prime Video charts.
Starring the forthcoming Lara Croft, Sophie Turner , Steal follows Zara Dunne (Turner), an office worker at a pension management company who becomes the target of thieves operating a major heist at the firm. Along with colleague Luke (Archie Madakwe), Zara is forced to transfer funds to the armed robbers before they flee, avoiding a confrontation with the police. Of course, things are never that straightforward, but to say any more would be to spoil a rollercoaster six episodes.
Initially seeming like it may be another Die Hard clone, Steal heads off into unexpected territory, and while seasoned viewers might see a few of the
twists coming, it's still an incredibly fun, fast-paced thriller with an excellent performance from Turner at the centre. If a classic in-over-their-head thriller in the Hitchcock vein is your sort of thing,
Steal should be right up your high-octane street. The Devil's Hour
RT score: 95%
Episodes: 11
Main Cast: Jessica Raine, Peter Capaldi, Nikesh Patel
This one is a slight cheat as theres actually two seasons available, but if youre preparing to batten down the hatches these eleven episodes make for a great weekend of TV.
The Devils Hour is a delicious mash-up of a grim police drama and a supernatural horror, as social worker Lucy (Jessica Raine) wakes at 3:33am (aka the devils hour) every night after experiencing terrifying visions. Turning to Peter Capaldis incarcerated killer Gideon who claims to remember the future for help, Lucy finds herself down a rabbit hole of ghosts, time loops and serial killers.
As terrifying as it is addictive, The Devils Hour honors its Doctor Who connections with plenty of scenes thatll have you hiding behind the sofa. But as the mystery unfolds, its gripping stuff, with increasingly mind-boggling reveals as to the true nature of Lucys haunting experiences. Definitely more intense than the others on this list, if youre looking for a show that you
can really sink your teeth into over a quiet weekend, set the clock for The Devils Hour.
